Should I Choose Broad Spectrum Vs. Full Spectrum CBD?

“Indeed, cannabis is less toxic than many of the drugs that physicians prescribe every day.”

Dr. Joycelyn Elders, Pediatrician, Public Health Administrator

Choosing the CBD product that is right for your body and your unique holistic function is vitally important. CBD is one of over 140 phytocannabinoids, a unique compound only found in cannabis and its subspecies, hemp. In addition to cannabinoids, these plants contain more than 100 terpenes, at least two dozen flavonoids, and numerous other phytonutrients. This naturally occurring formula is available to consumers in two primary blends, broad-spectrum and full-spectrum.

What is a Full Spectrum CBD Formula?

A full-spectrum extract is packed with all 545 known phytochemicals found in the plant’s trichomes. The small outgrowths that look like mushrooms are hemp’s stalk, stems, leaves, and flowers are the plant’s compound factory. Most of the trichomes are located on the flowers. A full-spectrum blend also includes a small amount of THC. Hemp legally contains 0.3% of the intoxicating compound. However, it’s not enough to produce the “high” associated with THC-dominant cannabis plants. Many consumers prefer the full-spectrum mix to experience all of hemp’s famous cannabinoids.

What is a Broad-Spectrum CBD Blend?

A broad-spectrum formula contains all the compounds except THC. After the plant matter and phytochemicals are separated, the extract goes through another process to remove the psychoactive phytocannabinoid. This allows the consumer to experience nearly every compound without worrying about any level of THC. Many athletes enjoy CBD balms to soothe sore joints and muscles after a challenging workout or tough competition. However, even the small amount of THC in the full spectrum can disqualify them from their chosen sport.

Is a Full-Spectrum Formula Safe & Legal?

Yes! When hemp was legalized in 2018 by the Farm Bill, the legislation listed all compounds derived from the plant, including up to 0.3% THC. The minuscule percentage is safe and doesn’t get you high. You can safely and legally purchase these whole-plant CBD gummies and topicals as long as the THC levels are at or below 0.3%.

Should I Choose a Full or Broad Spectrum CBD Blend?

Deciding on the right formula is a personal choice. If you’re highly sensitive to THC or are an athlete forbidden from using any product containing THC, then a broad-spectrum is the better choice. However, consider the full spectrum if you want the complete set of compounds, which can produce the entourage effect. Remember, the tiny amount of THC, 0.3% or less, won’t make a psychoactive response.

The entourage effect is a scientific theory that the plant “knows best.” Scientists theorize that the compounds work best together, providing the most benefits—a glance at the different phytochemicals in hemp shares many of the same qualities. For example, several cannabinoids and terpenes have anti-inflammatory potential. Although the broad-spectrum offers some level of the entourage effect, it’s not the complete formula you experience with the whole-plant blend.
